Can someone briefly explain to me how WP resizes images?

Hey there,

I’m finding WordPress fascinating so far, but I’m struggling to get one little detail. I’m sure it’s simple, but I just haven’t seen it explicitly stated anywhere so far. Some clarity would be appreciated.

Example: If I upload a square 4000px image (as an example), it will get resized into small, medium and large (in whatever resolution is set). If I insert that image in a post, it will ask me to select one of those sizes (or full size).

Let’s say I select size “Large”, and that large is 1000px. Does this mean that WP will always serve the image in size large? Regardless of whether it’s viewed on a 4k monitor (where full size would be ideal), or a 600px wide phone (Where Medium would be more than sufficient)? Presupposing WP’s default operation and a simple theme like twenty-seventeen.

I’d really appreciate if someone could clear that up for me, since it would allow me to make better choices regarding resolution.

Regards and thanks in advance.
